Spilt Soda

This is my entry for the Observer/Jonathan Cape Graphic Short Story Prize. Just click the title panel to read the whole massive thing. I heard this week that fellow Mancunian (and Manchester Comix Collective member) Stuart Kolakovic took the runner up prize with this, so big congrats to Stu. I guess I'll just have to wait untill Sunday's Observer to find out who won.

Speaking of this weekend, I will be at the Birmingham International Comics Show along with Andrew Tunney, Abigail Ryder and numerous other members of the MCC. I will have copies of The Everyday to sell and trade including issues 7 and 8 which debut this weekend. Also, I will have a few signed A3 prints of Spilt Soda to sell too. I will be wandering around making a nuisance of myself on both the Saturday and the Sunday but (hopefully) you can also locate my work at the Engine Comics table, so hunt that down. In case you've never met me I look like that guy I draw all the time. I will surely be in "the" bar on the Saturday night too. Come say hi or whatever greeting you prefer.

See you in Brum.

SOOO GREAT!

I loved every minute. What an awesome choices you made! The color, the format, the shots--seamless!

I hope to see more of that out of you. Good job.

Lovely stuff, I also really like the minimal colour schemes and... oooh, it isn't half satisfying looking at a whole big page o' comics like that! You really made good use of the format there.

It's quite exciting seeing these start popping up everywhere. It's a pity more of them can't find a home! Ha. You know, I bet it'd make for a great collection of over-sized comics or an exhibition or something.

Hi, John, thanks! Looking at it a month later I think its kinda busy and off-putting as a whole but I'm happy with the story, the style and the colour scheme (which was influenced by old Beano and Dandy Library comics, you know those little square ones?).

I'd like to see more of people's entries. I only know of four and I've created a little home for them here: http://manchestercomixcollective.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1147228%3ATopic%3A2924
A book would be great.

You know, I'm sure somebody mentioned to me that there was going to be an exhibition of all the judges favourites, but I can find no mention of this anywhere...

You know, some of the pacing and drawing of yours actually puts me in mind of Chester Brown!

Hi there,
have you seen the 'blog' on the Guardian's website? Someone (JackNoel) has suggested that people should post links to their entries in the comments section, seeing as the official coverage was pretty minimal/woeful.

Here's the link: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/books/2007/10/observer_books.html
if you want to put alink.
Best,
Seonaid

Thanks for the link, Seonaid. It is very much appreciated.
If you're interested I collected all the entries I could find in a discussion on the MCC forum, here:

Thanks again,
Adam :)

This is the best entry I've read so far. Actually much better than any of the winners.
