CanoScan LiDE 30 on Mac OS X 10.5

This technical help may seem completely out of place on this art blog but after scouring the internet for 3 hours trying to set my 6 year old scanner up on my new MacBook, I found this info half way down a lengthy comments section of a random blog. So I thought I'd post it here (slightly altered) as a message in a bottle to anyone else in need of it.

How to set up CanoScan LiDE 30 on Mac OSX 10.5

STEP 1:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=6623

STEP 2:
Select MAC OS X

STEP 3:
Download BOTH:

LiDE 20/LiDE 30 Scanner Driver Ver. 7.0.1.1aX
(Mac OS X)

lide20lide30n670un676un1240uosx7011aen.dmg

CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.0X
(Mac OS X)

CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz

STEP 4:
INSTALL CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.0X

STEP 5:
INSTALL LiDE 30 Scanner Driver Ver. 7.0.1.1aX . Make sure Applications>CanoScan Toolbox 4.1>Plug-Ins is selected as the install location.

STEP 6:
You will be asked to RESTART. You should.

STEP 7:
When you run CanoScan you can choose Photoshop as the default program to open the image in once it has scanned. You do not need Photoshop to open using Rosetta for this to work.

NOTE: If you want to scan directly from within Photoshop CS3, you need to copy the driver 'ScanGear CS 7.0X' which is found in Applications>CanoScan Toolbox 4.1>Plug-Ins into the photoshop pluggins folder, Applications> Adobe Photoshop CS3>Plug-Ins>Import/Export. You also need to open photoshop in Rosetta mode. Apple + I on the photoshop icon and select 'Open using Rosetta'. I would not recommend using this method though.

STEP 8:
Go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and remove both of the following:
N067U_ButtonManager.app
N124U_ButtonManager.app

STEP 9:
SCAN.

I hope you find this information much quicker than I did.

I had to give up trying to find a driver for my old scanner when I moved to OSX.

That's what I meant to say.

Aw dude, luckily I found something to get my big ol' A3 Mustek scanner going on OS X fairly promptly seeing as various comic artists had already been there before me! I'll link it, just in case you ever get one of those cheap A3 scanners so you dont have to go to too much trouble!

Hows the Macbook? Also, shouldn't you be poor right now? ;)
4th-Feb-2009 12:48 pm (UTC)
I am very poor right now. I had to get a laptop because I have no home. Being a hobo with a desktop PC just isn't practical.

And this is exactly why I'm too scared to take my old scanner off my del and put it on my macbook....tsk scanners!

Switching to 10.5, and been nothing but trouble with my current equipment, and with no real benefits. Im glad to get this working again.

Ok, I've installed the Driver and Toolbox onto my Mac. But it still says I need a plug-in. I don't have Photoshop installed since it's so damn expensive. Is there another program I can use? I think this is the only thing holding me up. -Jodi

One more question...if I decide to purchase Photoshop (which it looks like I'll need to), can I purchase Photoshop CS4 rather than CS3? Will it work the same way?
18th-Apr-2009 09:58 pm (UTC) - Excellent!

Like you I spent a fair while searching for information on setting up my CanoScan LiDE30 on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5. Your guide was spot on though, thanks a ton. I don't get why this install has become such a task. Installing on Tiger / PPC was an absolute doddle!

I followed your method and where I am getting stuck is when you select the application that will import the scan in Canoscan toolbox the folders all show the contents folders and so on. So I can't actually select the application itself. Weird. Any hints?

I didn't do step 8 and seems like the procedure brought promising results so far. What's step 8 for anyways?

Found this via Google. Finally can use my scanner again after years of non-use. Thanks!

Recently upgraded to Photoshop CS4 with Leopard running on a MBP 2006...found this post which helped save me from purchasing an unnecessarily new scanner! Photoshop CS4 no longer recommends using the TWAIN approach to importing images from the scanner...this solution is a life-saver -- THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!

Any ideas anyone? Mac OS X.4.11
23rd-Sep-2009 08:13 am (UTC) - Re: Argh, I've followed all of these instructions to a T and still can't get it to work.
It's important to install the Toolbox first, then the Scanner Driver. If you did it the wrong way around, just uninstall/delete everything then start again.

If that's not it I don't know how to help, this has worked for most other people.

Good luck.

Thanks for the guide! I was worried I'd have to unnecessarily purchase a new scanner just because of some silly software issue.

Note: this guide worked on my 13" MacBook Pro running CS4 and Snow Leopard (in 32-bit).
15th-Oct-2009 08:30 pm (UTC) - yay it's working

Seriously- I've been dreaming of you for almost a year now as my scanner sat useless. It just came back to life and I can't thank you enough!
Thanks so much for posting this!!!
